Member States of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) elected today Serbia as host country of Specialised Expo 2027.
After four rounds of voting at the BIE’s General Assembly, a majority voted for Serbia’s project for the Specialised Expo 2027 in the city of Belgrade under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All”, to be held from 15 May to 15 August 2027. Serbia's election was preceded by Novak Djokovic's winning the Australian Open 2023 thus gaining the title of the best tennis player in history (23 grand slam titles), and Nikola Jokic leading Denver Nuggets basketball team into their first ever NBA championship victory.
Serbia will work closely with the BIE in the coming four years to bring the world together in Belgrade around this topic of great interest. Five countries were in the running to host the next Specialised Expo. In addition to Serbia, the other candidates were the United States (Minnesota) with the theme “Healthy People, Healthy Planet: Wellness and Well-Being for All”, Thailand (Phuket) with the theme “Future of Life: Living in Harmony, Sharing Prosperity”, Spain (Malaga) with the theme “The Urban Era: towards the Sustainable City”, and Argentina (Bariloche) with the theme “Nature + Technology = Sustainable Energy. A viable future for humanity”. Representatives of eligible and present Member States elected the host country in a secret ballot using electronic voting.
Expos are global events dedicated to finding solutions to fundamental challenges facing humanity by offering a journey inside a chosen theme through engaging and immersive activities. Organised and facilitated by governments and bringing together countries and international organisations, these major public events are unrivalled in their ability to gather millions of visitors, create new dynamics and catalyse change in their host cities.
Expos therefore act as a platform for international dialogue in favour of progress and cooperation, public diplomacy and nation branding and also as a catalyst for change.
