Belgrade came to the forefront of the Balkans RES sector with the conference "Energy in the Balkans: Transition to Renewable Energy Sources and Improving Energy Networks", organized by the representative office of the Confederation of Italian Industry in Serbia, on 10 May 2022.
As the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has recently announced, in 2021 an increase in electricity generation capacity using renewable energy sources was observed globally.
Although hydropower plants still occupy the largest share in the total world capacity of RES power plants, the latest data show that the share of wind and solar power plants in newly built capacities in 2021 was as high as 88%. However, despite the great growth, experts point out that renewable energy sources must grow at a faster pace in order to achieve climate goals and energy demand.
When it comes to Serbia, the conclusion of the conference is that energy, especially the RES sector, is most important for economic development, investment and generation of new jobs, especially in times of crisis, such as the one we are experiencing in 2022.
